Kate Gold & Megan Simson - Her Words Unbound

Kate Gold, a Dartmoor based poet in conversation with Megan Simson as Kate shares some poetry from her collection Eight Buzzards Rising, how her poetry journey started, and more in Her Words Unbound

“Like most teenagers, I wrote the angst-ridden poems about love and how terrible it was to be a teenager.”

“Like most teenagers, I wrote the angst-ridden poems about love and how terrible it was to be a teenager. And then I drifted away from writing, started having a family, and occasionally I would write, but not very often.
Then later on, much later on, in my early 40s I went to do a creative arts degree and discovered that the things that I'd been writing that I thought weren't really poems because they didn't necessarily have rhythm or rhyme were considered to be poems. That really encouraged me and I got right back into it.”

Poetry gives me a voice. It gives me a form of self-expression and it gives me a way to connect as well, to read live with an audience and to feel the effects of your words in the room and see the effects of your words in people's faces is an amazing thing. And even though it always scares me, I do love doing it. Sharing my work and seeing it touch others. I know that it's much more than just me writing a poem, that I'm talking about truths and experiences that other people have and other people relate to.”

“I sometimes feel like a poem is a placeholder capturing a moment, is like a photograph, but obviously it's in words. It encapsulates a moment.”

Kate, reading a recently written poem Stitch Their Names Together which was inspired by her involvement in a commemorative art project of the same name.

Stitch Their Names Together, is a project Kate took part in last year where women stitch the names of the Palestinian people killed in Gaza and inspired this poem, which she performed at Taking The Mic at Exeter Phoenix, hosted by Tim King.

The ongoing project’s ethos is “Commemorating Gaza: Stitching for collective honouring of each soul, they have names not numbers. Thousands of people lost, men, women and children.”

They are raising funds to support the Palestinian people of Gaza and can be supported here
